A well-fed crew is a happy crew.

Rooftop Safety

Everyone working on your roof should wear fall-arrest gear. This is the only safe way to protect against a fall, and it’s not the place to cut corners. So just bite the bullet and buy a setup for everyone in your crew who will be on the roof.

Basic fall-arrest systems start at around $100 and include a harness; a lanyard that connects the harness to the safety rope; the safety rope; a rope grab, or clutch, which allows for movement up and down the rope; and a roof anchor. Anchors are installed with nails or screws driven into roof rafters. Depending on the type, they can be located at the roof ridge or over any rafter, provided it’s a minimum distance from the roof edge (typically 6 feet). Some installers like to place anchors on the opposite side of the ridge from the installation area to keep them out of the way. Anchors may be designed for temporary or permanent installation, and both types are reusable. Permanent anchors might come in handy for future module maintenance and cleaning. Be sure to seal any fasteners on permanent anchors, or any holes left by fasteners in temporary anchors, to prevent roof leaks.
